You want to be free?

posted on

Being free is to no longer be a slave or prisoner and to be exempt from bondage.  We are well aware that Jesus came to set the captives free.  The captives are everyone.  Some were, and some are bound to sin.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,  to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Luke 4:18-19

Deliverance is freedom from imprisonment; rescue and release from bondage.  Who wants to stay in bondage?  Most would say no one but after having been introduced to liberty, so many choose to remain bound to their imprisonment.

There are people praying day in and day out for deliverance from this and that.  They are asking God to remove this person or block that thing.  Jesus read of Himself from the book of Esaias.  The foretold prophecy of why God sent His Son. Receiving Jesus gives us our freedom and following instructions from God by way of Holy Spirit keeps us free.

It is sad to hear people share what they are praying to God for and how they are asking the Lord to help them.  The many cries of 'Lord, do it, Lord, do it right now' go unanswered, and the individuals are not free.  Here's what some may not have thought of, or maybe have; over 2,000 years ago, God sent His son Jesus to free us all.  That was the plan, that is the plan, and the plan has not changed.  It is the only plan!

When people go to God begging for Him to do what He has already done, it is these people who do not honestly want to be free that's.  Yes, right!  They do not want to be free.  Think of it like this: being trapped in a house and you call out for help.  Help arrives, tears down the back door, come in and tell you there is now a way out.  Instead of accepting the way out, you continue to bang on the front door shouting, "Help me, let me out!"  Your help sees that they have provided a way for you to be free, they leave you banging on the front door.  They go and leave the pathway open.  God does the same.  He knows there is a way out for everyone, and He lets you choose if you want to be free or not. God will not drag you to freedom.  But He will lead you to freedom.  All you have to do is turn to that way.  You can do as much shouting, screaming, and praying Lord, help me, free me, deliver me, and do it, will not make you free.  You want to be free, accept the truth.

The truth that there is only one way to be free:

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31-32

Let's look a few points to consider when it comes to being free:

  • When you are a disciple, it is because you are free
  • Your freedom is there because you have followed Jesus' word
  • Jesus' word is the truth, and you know it because following it has to lead you to be free and away from being bound

Hopefully by now, if you are not free, questions are going off in your mind.  Let's answer this one: I say I want to be free, why am I not?

In John 8, the Jews still followed a way, but that way did not exclude every way but Jesus' way.  Many get caught up in trying to follow another way which once was as they attempt to add Jesus to that way.  This is not how to be free.  Just as Jews looked at Abraham as being their father while missing the spiritual bondage they were under, others do it too.  There are many who link themselves to certain denominations, religious practices, and leadership with the same mindset of the Jews.  They think they are free.  Their freedom, in their eyes, comes from traditional practices, although they know they are not truly free.

We are made free from the truth.  What is the truth?  The truth is, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.  John 14:6

If there is any way you go, follow, or do that does not lead you to the Father, it is not the truth.  Many speak what is truth to them, but just because it is a truth to one does not mean it is the truth.  Remember Jesus said He is the truth.  There is a specified truth we are to follow in order to be free.  There are those who continue to follow their truth or a truth of what someone has shared with them.  They are far from free, and they know it.  That is why people are still praying to God for whatever they know causes them not to be free.  When one is free, they are whole and there is no lack- nothing missing.

Here's a word of caution to those who are still praying for God to do what He has already done.  Jesus said if you continue in His word.  Our freedom from sin is wrapped in our course of action as it relates to what Jesus commands.  Therefore, for the many seeking freedom from whatever bounds them are ultimately seeking freedom for sin.  (John 8:34)  Ponder this, if you are praying to God to remove something from you, then you already know it is sin.  That sin keeps you from being free.  There is no need to look to prayer for your freedom from sin.  What is needed is obedience.

You want to be free?  Obey. Do what Jesus said and you will be free and will remain free.  When you know what is present in your life, you have to deal with it.  Instead of walking away from their sin, most cloak it with the 'I'm waiting on God' excuse. (John 15:22)

There are far too many tagging themselves as disciples, Christians, children of God and such, but they are of the world.  There is imprisonment present in their lives because they do not know the one who sent Jesus: the Father.  You want to be free?  The truth shall make you free.  Knowing the truth is not enough to be free.  The truth produces freedom by what you do.  Being free is your when you convert from one state to another.  When you walk away from sin and into righteousness you are free.

It cannot be emphasized enough that when you want to be free you are willing to do whatever it takes.  The question before you now is do I really want to be free.  Stop blaming your bondage on the devil, your spouse, your job, your past, church hurt, your medical condition, your children, your family, or religion.  Your bondage is your fault.  You want to be free, leave what holds you bound!
