Lead Moderator's notes for the teaching on Romans 8 Authorized King James Version.

Romans 8:1-4

  • 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
    • Condemnation- to blame, accusing, to pronounce guilty
    • Those who are in Christ Jesus will not be condemned
      • In Christ is to not be in sin, but in Spirit
    • For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
      • Law- enforceable rule
        • There are those who look at some laws as principles
        • The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus says we inherit eternal life in Christ Jesus, thereby negating the law of sin and death
    • For what the law (enforceable rule) alone did not move one to feel convicted (worthy of blame).
    • There was no staying power for those who attempted to keep the law, there was no proof that the law could be kept.
      • Those who attempted to keep the faith failed again and again
    • When Jesus came flesh/sin nature was pronounced guilty
      • Jesus demonstrated how the law could be kept through righteousness
    • The law was meant to be good and when Jesus came it showed us that the law was doable through Him.
    • Fulfilled-satisfied, achieved, accomplished
      • We are able to live out the law when we have Holy Spirit giving us instruction on how to do so

Romans 8:5-8

  • 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
    • For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh;
      • Being after the flesh is to be in sin nature
      • When we are in sin nature we sin
        • There is an expectation for one to be in flesh
    • but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit
      • The expectation should change when you are in God
        • God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and God the Spirit (Holy Spirit)
    • For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace
      • Carnal minded (fleshly thinking) leads to death
        • Death is separation from God
          • Ultimately your end is hell
    •  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God
      • The fleshy thinking is contrary to God
        • You are in opposition with God
    • for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be
      • The carnal mind is not ruled by the enforceable rule of God nor can it be
    • So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
      • Those that are operating in sin nature will never be what God wants

Romans 8:9-11

  • 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.
    • But ye are not in the flesh
      • Once you accept Christ and His finished work you are no longer of the flesh (world, sin nature)
        • you move to a place of perfection (being complete and whole)
    • but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.
      • Being in God is being in the way in which God ordained
      • When you are not in the flesh, you are allowing Holy Spirit to live in you
        • No two operating systems can run at the same time.
          • You can't run heat and air from the same unit at the same time
          • Either God is in control or Satan is in control
    • Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
      • The Spirit of Christ is Holy Spirit and when you do not have Holy Spirit then you are not one of God's
      • It is said that possession is 9/10th's of the law
        • Possession is nine-tenths of the law is an expression meaning that ownership is easier to maintain if one has possession of something, or difficult to enforce if one does not.
        • That is not how it works with God.  He wants ALL of you or none of you
        • People try to use the 9/10th's of the law rule when it comes to God
          • Give him one thing, 3 things or 8 things and keep one
          • With God it is absolutely all in or all out
            • Be hot or cold, lukewarm, he will spew you out of His mouth
    • And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin
      • When Christ is in you there is no place for sin
        • Remember you are full and filled with Him (fulfilled)
    • but the Spirit is life because of righteousness
      • We have a source that brings everlasting life because we allow God to be our main power source
    • But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in youhe that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.
      • It was the Spirit of God which brought Jesus up from the dead
      • When you accept Jesus, it is that same Spirit which lives in you

Romans 8:12-17

  • 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
    • Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
      • A debtor is one who has something only because of Jesus Christ
        • We do not have liberty and freedom because of the flesh (sin nature)
        • When we are of the flesh we show allegiance to flesh and live life under the rule of sin nature
    • For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die
      • If you show allegiance to the flesh (sin nature) you will die
        • Be separated from God which leads to a place in hell
    •  but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live
      • If we allow Holy Spirit to teach us, guide us, help us; we will put to death the body (flesh) and you will show allegiance to God through leading a life in the Spirit
    • For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
      • Because we are guided by Holy Spirit, we are the sons of God
      • God becomes responsible for leading us because we are His children
    •  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear
      • When you are in God you no longer have the spirit of bondage you trade it in for the spirit of freedom
        • 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
      • Fear has been traded in for assurance (confidence) this is faith
    • but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father
      • We have been accepted as children of God, this is why we can say "my Father"
        • To be able to say to God "my Father" makes it personal; makes it intimate
    • The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God
      • The Holy Spirit itself will be evidence that your spirit is true and will prove that you are the children of God
    • and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ
      • Heirs-successors
      • Joint-heirs-combined successors
    •  if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
      • Undergo something unpleasant with Jesus
      • Endure something with Jesus
      • Stand through something with Jesus
      • Go through something with Jesus
      • Live through something with Jesus
        • When you do it without Him there is no assurance that you can make it through
      • You will be lifted up together, you and Jesus

Romans 8:18-21

  • 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.  19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waits for the manifestation of the sons of God.  20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21 because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
    • For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
      • I suppose that sorrows, afflictions, distresses, miseries, woes, griefs of this time are not deserving, not praiseworthy, not admirable, not  so great to be associated with the fame, admiration, achievement and honor which shall be discovered, shown, or known in us.
    • For the earnest expectation of the creature waits for the manifestation of the sons of God.
      • The sincere true hope, belief, expectancy of the living being (us) stay in a place of obedience until the signs are shown of the children of God.
        • What do we mean when we say manifestation?
          • Appearance, display, materialization, made visible
    •  For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
      • The created one was created prone to or likely to be affected by extreme pride, not freely, not voluntarily, not eagerly, but by way of cause or motive of them who has received the same confident desire
    • because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
      • Living being or created one, just like Jesus, will be released from the imprisonment of  rotting away into the highly enjoyable, magnificent, wonderful freedom of the children of God.
        • Free from self destruction

Romans 8:22-25

  • 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now. 23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. 24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man sees, why doth he yet hope for? 25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
    • For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now
      • The whole creation is the world
      • Overburdened or overload and works hard under pressure in a feeling of discomfort
        • The world knows that sin produces a burden and they work overtime trying to make the uncomfortable situations in their life comfortable
        • The world knows there is pressure, the world feels the pressure
          • Actions taken (sin) are ways the world uses to try and relieve the pressure but there is never any relief
      • The until now is, until Jesus provided a way to be free from the bondage of sin and death
    • And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
      • Not only the sinners but the children of God also know of the burdensome life through sufferings
      • Believers have the product (result) of the Spirit
        • What is the firstfruits of the Spirit?
          • Being free from the law of sin and death through the law of the Spirit of life given by Jesus Christ
      • We know our sufferings and we feel and acknowledge it within ourselves
      • Waiting for the receiving of deliverance of the body from sin nature
    • For we are saved by hope:
      • We are rescued by a feeling of trust i.e. faith
    • but hope that is seen is not hope:
      • A feeling of trust that is realized or understood is not hope or a feeling of trust
    • for what a man sees, why doth he yet hope for?
      • Why do we need to have faith if one already understands or realizes something,
    • But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
      • The thing we are hoping for we wait patiently on it to come to pass.
      • If we wait in our place of patience we will be in place to become perfect and complete in Him

Romans 8-26-30

  • 26 Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
    • Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities:
      • Holy Spirit is our antidote to make our weaknesses, ailments, frailties go away
    • for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered
      • We don't know what we should pray for as we should do, but Holy Spirit does
      • because He is on the inside of us and He knows us and our capabilities in God His pryer are more accurate for our situation(s)
    • And he that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit
      • It is God who looks in our hearts so He knows the motives of the Spirit
      • The Spirit and God share the same motives
      • If we follow Holy Spirit in us, then we follow God
    • because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God
      • The Holy Spirit is a mediator for the saints according to the will of God
      • As long as we are walking in the will of God, Holy Spirit will speak on our behalf
      • Holy Spirit will not negotiate for us in our wrong, that is what Jesus did
        • Why would God deliver us through Jesus then send Holy Spirit to keep delivering us
        • Holy Spirit is here to keep us delivered
          • Past tense, deliverance has already taken place in order for Holy Spirit to enter in
          • Holy Spirit remains as our deliverance remains
          • It is Jesus who comes to delivers
    • And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God
      • Our past, present, and what is to come, the good, bad, and ugly, the sufferings, the victories, produces good to those who love God
      • Not because it was your lot in life, but because your goal is to walk righteous even when unrighteous acts have been to you.
        • Your response to what you have gone through, when always righteous God is your vindicator, He fixes all you situations, issues, and circumstances
    • to them who are the called according to his purpose.
      • Those who adhere to the voice of God follow their reason of existing
    • For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
      • God knew you and set aside an ordinance for you to be changed in to the image of Jesus
      • God knew you would be the one who would listen and obey first that others may follow after you
        • You are a leader so that others will follow because you followed well
        • God wants those who will teach what they learned, not what they want to teach
    • Moreover whom he did predestinate,
      • Whom He already decided on in advance
    •  them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified
      • Those He called He also made acceptable for His purpose
    • and whom he justified, them he also glorified
      • Those He made acceptable, He also lifted up.

Romans 8:31-39

  • 31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    • What shall we then say to these things?
      • What things?
        • That God made a way for us not to have to live in sin because he died for us and he sent the Comforter for us
        • Holy Spirit to keep us sustained until Judgement day
    • If God be for us, who can be against us?
      • If God is on our side rooting for us and making victory available to us
      • The one that is against us is definitely not so wise, knowing that the Creator of all who has never lost a case in any way is the great Defender, Redeemer, Protector, Provider, and Deliverer
    • He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all,
      • God who gave His own Son, Jesus for the sake of us all, to gain freedom from the bondage of the law (the enforceable rule) of sin and death
    • how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
      • He gave us Jesus, His only begotten Son (John 3:16), why would He not give us the mere needs and wants for the purpose of living here on earth
      • Jesus as a gift to us is more than:
        • A bank account
        • A car, house
        • Job, career, promotion
        • A miracle, sign, or a wonder
    • Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect?
      • Who will accuse God's chosen of anything?
    • It is God that justifies.
      • God makes us acceptable
    • Who is he that condemns?
      • Who is the one that considers us guilty?
    • It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again,
      • Jesus saw our guilt stained life and paid the price by dying and freeing us from guilt by rising to show that the price was paid
    •  who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
      • Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father
        • The right hand is the strong hand, the powerful hand
      • Not only is He there but He is interceding for us
    • Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
      • Who will come between me and what Christ did for me?
        • He freed me from the law of sin and death
      • What will stop me from loving Christ?
    •  shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
      • Tribulation-hardship, something that causes great difficulty, affliction
      • Distress-problems caused by a lack of basic necessities
      • Persecution-harassment, oppression, torture, cruel or unfair treatment because of beliefs
      • Famine-a severe shortage of something
      • Nakedness-defenseless, exposed, vulnerable
    • As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
      • Psalm 44:22 (AKJV) Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter
      • Self-preservation is not the goal of Christians
        • It was not the goal of Jesus and because He is our example it should not be our goal
        • Matthew 10:39, He that finds his life shall lose it: and he that loses his life for my sake shall find it.
    •  Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
      • Nay is a word that introduces a correction
      • What is being corrected, we are accounted (considered or viewed) as sheep for the slaughter (major defeat)
        • This is how the world sees us
        • This is how the world/Satan viewed Jesus,
      • But the truth is because we are in God we are not just victors or defeaters, we are greater than victors or defeaters
        • What is more than a victor??
    • For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
      • We are to be convinced that nothing presented to us on an level can impose on our relationship with God
